The Conservative government’s ambition to deliver three million high quality apprenticeships by 2020 is to be underpinned by a controversial levy much discussed in these pages: companies with a wage bill of more than £3mn will contribute 0.5% to a digital pot from which they can claim in order to fund apprenticeships. The government hopes this will drive an increase in apprenticeship schemes and opportunities for young people.

Who's got the bottleneck?

When talking with bodyshop owners and managers it’s quite common to hear them talk about bottlenecks in their business and how they slow production and increase Work In Progress (WIP). Most of us know that these logjams or constraints we see everyday in our departments create delays and make promised delivery dates difficult to achieve, but rarely do any of us apply any science or serious thinking as to their causes and more pervasive effects.
