In the first of a multi-part series, we take you back to basics with suspension and steering technologies, with a deep dive into basic system geometry

The only connection between the road wheels and the vehicle structure is the suspension system, which has to re-act the drive torque, the braking torque, the forces generated in cornering and the yaw caused by the centre of pressure position relative to the centre of gravity. In addition, all the links must not fail, be produced at minimal cost and be able to sustain a high  speed  road  obstacle  impact without braking.

A customer is complaining that their 2016 Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDi has an engine misfire. The vehicle's engine malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated and several misfire related trouble codes have been stored in the engine control module fault memory. We have carried out some basic wiring checks and replaced the spark plugs but the fault is still there. Have you come across misfire faults on this model before?

Keeping ADAS calibrated

More vehicles integrate ADAS systems, we take a look at how to keep them calibrated

More vehicles integrate ADAS systems, we take a look at how to keep them calibrated

As perhaps the most pressing issue facing the UK repair industry, the IMI has been working with industry partners to provide guidance on maintaining advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Announcing its new IMI-accredited training course in October 2019, Thatcham Research reported that four million cars on our roads are already fitted with the most popular ADAS function; Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). What’s more, every one of the 29 models tested by Euro NCAP that year had at least one ADAS technology.

Connectivity: back to basics

As vehicles become increasingly connected MotorPro looks at the onboard communications technologies helping them transfer data between systems

Vehicles are becoming increasingly connected, whether it’s onboard systems that have direct channels of communication with each other or the vehicle being able to send data off-board, either through a hard connection or wirelessly.

These abilities are making vehicles ever more complex, but those working on them shouldn’t be overawed. We take connectivity back to basics, looking at three onboard communications technologies helping cars talk, to themselves and the outside world.

As vehicles become more complicated, repairing them after accidents will keep getting trickier. Thatcham Research’s top technical brain, Richard Billyeald, gives us the lowdown

Cars as we know them are changing fast. Manufacturers and legislators alike are pushing for huge reductions in CO2, NOx and particulate emissions, while also aiming to improve safety for vehicle occupants and other road users.

A customer is complaining that their 2015 Honda CR-V is making a squeaking noise from the rear of the vehicle when pulling away. We suspect the rear differential to be at fault but are reluctant to replace it as it is an expensive part. Have any other Honda CR-V owners reported this squeaking noise before?

The problem

A customer's Chrysler Grand Voyager is in for a routine service and they have complained that the fuel filler nozzle continuously cuts out when re-fuelling the vehicle. We have experienced the fault when re-fuelling and have visually checked the fuel filler pipe for blockages but we can’t find the source of the fault.

Out of kilter: recalibrating commercials

Advanced driver-assistance systems are taking commercial vehicles into a new, safer era, but recalibrating them correctly is a matter of life and death

Advanced driver-assistance systems are taking commercial vehicles into a new, safer era, but recalibrating them correctly is a matter of life and death

For commercial vehicle operators, there’s nothing more frustrating than a chipped windscreen. Although it’s fairly easy to rectify, it’s often just enough to compromise safety and take a truck off the road. However, more and more commercial vehicles now rely on complex advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), meaning that the technicians servicing these vehicles need to be able to remount and recalibrate high-tech sensors to keep everything running safely.

How electrification is changing our approach to vehicle repair

Powertrain technology is changing as electrification takes hold, but how will it change vehicle repair?

Powertrain technology is changing as electrification takes hold, but how will it change vehicle repair?

Electrified vehicles are becoming more of a common sight on the UK’s roads. Since the first hybrid-electric cars of 20 years ago, the technology has developed rapidly. With carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions targets getting more and more stringent, and the fines for breaching them increasing, most manufacturers now offer hybrids across their ranges. Some are going further still, Hyundai, Jaguar, Volkswagen, Porsche and many others offering purely electric vehicles.

The problem

A customer with a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is complaining of a delayed gear engagement when selecting drive or reverse. The vehicle came in with the engine malfunction indicator lamp illuminated and trouble code P0741 stored. We have checked the transmission oil level and this is OK. We suspect the transmission needs reconditioning, but we are hesitant to carry out the reconditioning as this is an expensive repair. Is there anything else we should check first?
